5 Secrets to Holiday Hosting

12:00 AM

Being a host is a seriously stressful job for any ordinary day... now throw a major holiday in the midst! You are bound to forget things. You'll be thankful you read this post after shuttering through the memory of last Easter's mishap. No cousin Eddie surprises here! When preparing a room for a guest its easy to prep things the way you like it. Here are 5 EASY, quick and simple ways to take the extra step and ensure your guests feel at home. Which provides you one less embarrassment or issue to worry about while knife deep in carving your over perfectly baked 20lb bird.

1. First things first, THE BED! Your guests arrive in the next few days which doesn't allow for much time to be able to upgrade your mattress. However, you can purchase a pillow-top mattress pad that will add extra support and comfort that your 15 year old mattress has  lost. Throw in some nice HIGH thread count sheets too. You'll never have a grumpy guest as a result of not sleeping well. :)

2. Show your soft side! Your home's thermostat is set to your ideal temperature, however that is not necessarily everyones. My guest bedroom notoriously runs cooler than the rest of my house so I make sure to have spare blankets located IN the room so my guests have the option to layer up. My down comforter is enough for me, though my grandparents are usually thankful to have some extra warmth if need be, because guests can always use less blankets if they're warm. It would be embarrassing and as an awesome host you don't want your guests to come to the breakfast table talking about how they FROZE all night. So find a way to nicely display some plush blankets!

3. Bath towels! Ever been to a guest's home and you go into the bathroom to take a shower and you're like "Uhh... where are the towels?" Without trying to snoop through the linen closet you finally find some to use only to have your sister-in-law tell you those black towels are the ones she uses when she dyes her hair and uses sunless tanner. To be frank, lay some out for your guests and give them a full set. Some people like to have their face towel separate from their bath and hair towel. This excludes them from feeling like they're snooping or possibly from using the wrong ones. Remember too, they also don't want to have to come ask you for every little thing because they do not want to inconvenience you.

4. In addition to the temperature rule of thumb, you could never have too many lighting options. If you already have some overhead recessed can lighting or a ceiling pendant, it may be helpful for a guest if they have other options. Many people read bedside at night or need bathroom type lighting to apply make-up. Whether they need more lighting, better lighting or more accessible lighting, adding a floor lamp or a cute pair of matching end table lamps its a good investment to consider. These sweet touches will be appreciated! They may seem minuscule to you but they'll enhance your guest's stay, and make you feel great as a host.

5. Lastly, if you are unable to provide your guests with their own private bathroom away from kids and other potential guests, including a mirror in their room is always appreciated! It is never fun having to fight for bathroom time so if you're limited on the lous, then offer another space for your guests to get ready. A vanity is another nice option. Redirecting traffic to other areas to open the bathroom for only things you can do IN the bathroom is the smart detour to navigate. This is the road to a happy family and guests feeling welcomed!

Happy Thanksgiving, safe traveling and happy hosting!
